Palate Pleaser: The Artistic Brilliance of Beaded Black Hair 💇🏾♀️✨
Celebrating the Sparkling Art of Beaded Hairstyles
Hey cousinnnnns,
Welcome to "Palate Pleaser," a vibrant corner of "Blk Art Bites," where I explore creative and cool things. This segment is part exercise, part way to work my writing muscle, and part personal diary. Here, I dive into the dynamic world of Black creativity, celebrating the artists, musicians, writers, and innovators who inspire and captivate. Join me as I share my insights, reflections, and musings on the cultural brilliance that shapes our world.
Shoutout to my Antiguan mother, who never allowed me to get beads in my hair. No matter how much I begged, she would always say no.
I love my mother, but at my big age, I still fuss her out over this. Growing up, I thought the sound of the beads knocking against each other when you shook your head from side to side was the coolest thing ever. I’m an adult NOW, so getting beads in my locs is doable! I guess this is THE one cool advantage of being a grown-up.
The Art of Beading: For many centuries, beads have been used to adorn Black hair, serving both decorative and symbolic purposes. Whether in ancient African civilizations or today's trendsetting communities, beaded hairstyles have always been a canvas for the creativity, heritage, and resilience that Black culture epitomizes.
These intricate designs are more than beautiful—they celebrate identity and tradition.
For many African tribes, the placement and style of bead ornaments signify social status, age, and clan affiliation. These elaborate designs are not just beautiful patterns; they are steeped in tradition and meaning. Today, beaded hairstyles continue to express personal empowerment and deep national pride.
In contemporary culture, artists and influencers are reimagining beaded hairstyles. Singer Solange, known for her picture-decorated beaded hairdos, and Glodean White (I wrote about Glodean and her beads for my art on wax series here), who gained fame by transforming her hair into elegant beaded braids, have turned this art form into symbols of luxury and emancipation. Solange’s classic yet modern beaded hairdo exemplifies how traditional techniques can be blended with new visions of grace.
Hair beads are finding their way into the hands of leading Black hair artists and stylists. These creators mix traditional techniques with innovative designs, resulting in styles that are both timeless and cutting-edge. By incorporating beads, these artists add texture, color, and life to hair, transforming it into a three-dimensional artwork.
Beaded Black hair is more than just a style; it is an art form passed down through generations. It serves as a means to express individual personality while celebrating cultural heritage. The beauty and versatility of beaded hairstyles embody the richness of Black creativity.
That’s it for this week’s Palette Pleaser! 💇🏾♀️✨ As you admire the art of beaded Black hair, remember that each bead tells a story of culture and identity.
Stay tuned for more cultural essays and delightful art content next Wednesday.
Until next time,
Stay bold, stay brilliant, and remember, as Jay-Z says, You could be anywhere in the world, but you're here with me. I appreciate that!

Love this post!!
Loved this post! In 8th grade I got the Alicia Keys beaded cornrows and you couldn’t tell me nothing! I was one of few Black girls in the NJ suburb where I grew up up, so I got a lot of ignorant comments, but I felt so regal and cool ✨
